This one is going to be controversial. Great! Bring it on. I've formulated a concept that I call the NEO (new) music industry. People are currently in the "brick and mortar" music industry will argue that the industry, as it stands, is alive and well and it's not going anywhere. Granted, people will always love, buy, support and listen to hours of music at a time. But the internet is equally here... and it's not going anywhere either.
People can say whatever they want to say, but the reason that the music industry is struggling right now is because of one word, INTERNET. And really, it's not the internet's fault. Do you remember how you could buy an entire album (LP) for $9.99 ? Ok how about this one... You remember how back in the day you could buy a single with 2 or 3 special remixes on it? Aight. So check this one... do you remember how most of the songs on an album were actually good and you would hear at least 3 hits off of one single album from one single artist? Well what happened to those days? I'll tell you what happened, greed and the concept of the "quick buck". But mainly greed. Yes, people download music but SO WHAT? Let'em have it. I sound crazy right? Not really, because people will actually spend money on what they believe in. Additionally, if an artist would actually give his/her fans (even though I don't like that word) more than just one good song on a boring album with 16 songs on it, a crappy video and an embarrassing live performance then JUST MAYBE people would be more enthused about going to iTunes and making a purchase. I fully believe that when someone buys my music, they are investing in my life and my well being. They want me to have a sale so that I can afford to come back with more. If I make a $1 million USD by next Fall, I should be more than capable of giving back more great music, videos and a hype live performance to my audience. What else do I have to do? Why else would I be so busy? When my friends (fans) invest in me, I'm on their payroll. I owe them a good product... every time. I owe them a hug and kiss when I see them out in public. I owe them my prayers when they tell me that a song I've written touches on something that they are dealing with. That's what my friends employ me, they are paying me to give back to the community and not to embarrass them with drugs, scandals and drama with the law. The internet isn't the problem, MP3's aren't a problem, ipods aren't the problem. Those are remarkable enhancements of technology that I embrace. The problem is the industry. Our consumers want more from us... but we want more from record companies. Are we going to get it? That's not my concern. My concern lies in the book that I'll be releasing in October. Stay tuned because I'm going to let these people HAVE IT!
But please be informed, I'm not angry, just adamant. The book will be informative and uplifting to the rest of us artists that want a chance out here. If I can do it, so can any of you.
